Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is a multi-purpose sports complex located at Sydenhams Road in Park Town, near Chennai Central railway station. Originally built as the Corporation Stadium in 1946 on the site of the old Madras Zoo, it hosted nine Test cricket matches between 1956 and 1965.
The stadium was completely refurbished and renamed in 1993 after India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, expanding its capacity to around 40,000 spectators. Since then, it has primarily hosted football matches and athletic competitions, including the prestigious Nehru Cup in 1993 and the 1995 South Asian Games.
The stadium serves as the home ground for the Tamil Nadu football teams as well as Chennaiyin FC from the Indian Super League. The complex also includes an indoor stadium with an 8,000-seat capacity, supporting sports like volleyball, basketball, and table tennis. Renovations in 2012 and 2013 upgraded the synthetic athletics track, football turf, floodlights, and added a warm-up facility.
The stadium is also used for concerts and public events, making it a prominent sports and cultural venue in Chennai. It is well known for being one of India's best football facilities built to FIFA standards.
