The temple is situated near Karol Bagh and derives its name from the large prayer flags, or "jhandas," that were traditionally offered here. The temple's history dates back to the 18th century when a cloth merchant named Badri Das discovered the idol of Jhandewali Mata while digging near a waterfall.

The original idol, which had damaged hands during excavation, was consecrated in a cavern basement known as "Maa Gufa Wali," while a new replica was installed on the ground floor, referred to as "Maa Jhande Wali". The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali, adding to its religious significance.
