Jim Corbett Gurney House
Jim Corbett’s Gurney House in Nainital, Uttarakhand, is a historic colonial-era bungalow built in 1881 by Mary Jane Corbett, Jim Corbett's mother. It was constructed using materials from their previous home on Alma Hill after it was destroyed by a landslide, giving Gurney House its name which refers to a house made from carted remains. Located on Ayarpatta Hill near Nainital Lake, it served as Jim Corbett’s family residence until they left India in 1947.
The house is now privately owned but preserved as a heritage site showcasing Corbett’s personal belongings such as his trophies, fishing rod, books, and furniture. Surrounded by gardens and forest, it reflects the lifestyle of the famed hunter-conservationist and writer, offering visitors an intimate look into his life and legacy, though visits require prior appointments.
The house remains a significant cultural landmark tied to Jim Corbett’s legacy of wildlife conservation and adventure.
