Jiranga, also known as Jeerango, is a Tibetan settlement and village located in the Gajapati district of Odisha. It is home to the Padmasambhava Mahavihara Monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in Eastern India, inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 2010. The monastery was established by Tibetan refugees who settled here after fleeing Tibet in the late 1950s. It is built in the traditional Atanpuri style of architecture, featuring a towering Buddha statue and facilities for over 200 resident monks and students studying Tibetan Buddhism and culture.
The area, often called "Mini Tibet" or "Phuntsokling" (land of happiness), is serene and lush, surrounded by hills and greenery. The monastery complex includes meditation halls, smaller temples, and a spiritual garden. Jiranga is about 90 kilometers from Berhampur town and has become a peaceful spiritual hub attracting visitors interested in Buddhist culture and Tibetan heritage.
