Jiundan Fort
Jiundan Fort in Amritsar, Punjab, is more commonly known as Gobindgarh Fort. It was originally built in the 18th century by Gujjar Singh of the Bhangi Misl to defend the city and protect the sacred Golden Temple from invaders.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire, captured and strengthened the fort in the early 19th century, renaming it in honor of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. The fort’s architecture is a blend of Sikh, Mughal, and European influences, featuring strong brick and lime walls arranged in a square layout with fortified bastions and multiple defensive gates.
It also had a moat and ravelins (outward sloping fortifications) to withstand cannon attacks. The fort housed military supplies, weaponry, and the treasury, believed to hold valuable treasures including the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond. Controlled later by the British, it served various military purposes before being opened to the public as a museum and cultural site.
Its design combines robust military engineering with ornate architectural details, reflecting the era's strategic and artistic heritage while symbolizing protection and pride for Amritsar and Punjab.
