Jumma Masjid, Uparkot

Jumma Masjid in Uparkot Fort, Junagadh, Gujarat, is a historic mosque dating back to the 15th century, built during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Begada by converting an earlier Hindu temple or palace identified locally as Ranakdevi Mahal.

It features Indo-Islamic architectural style with a blend of Hindu elements, evident in its intricately carved sandstone pillars about 140 of them reused from the original temple—and the lotus-shaped domes reminiscent of Jain temple designs. The mosque has a spacious courtyard covered with white marble, a large ablution tank, and a prayer hall supported by numerous columns. Despite partial ruin and vandalism over time, its delicate stone carvings and architectural details remain impressive.

The mosque served as an important religious and cultural center, symbolizing the Sultanate’s consolidation of power in the region. It is now protected as a state monument and attracts visitors interested in its architectural beauty and historical significance within the ancient Uparkot Fort complex. From the mosque's rooftop, visitors can enjoy excellent views of Junagadh city.
