Kalla Fort, Alwar

Kalla Fort, also known as Bala Quila or Alwar Fort, is a historic hill fort located in Alwar, Rajasthan, perched about 1,000 feet above the city on the Aravalli Range. Originally built by the Nikumbh Rajputs around 928 CE, it was reconstructed and heavily fortified by Hasan Khan Mewati in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The fort stretches over 5 kilometers in length and 1.5 kilometers in width, featuring 15 large towers, 51 smaller towers, and 446 musket loopholes, along with eight bastions intended for defense, making it one of Rajasthan’s most formidable forts. Bala Quila has witnessed a succession of rulers including the Mughals, Marathas, Jats, and the Kachhwaha Rajputs. Notably, Mughal emperor Babur once used it as a treasury, and Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir) was exiled there for three years during Akbar’s reign.

Architectural influences display a blend of Rajput and Indo-Islamic styles, combining robust defensive structures with intricate details such as marble columns and balconies. The fort’s six main gates - Jai Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Kishan Pol, and Andheri Gate—offer entry points through its impressive walls.

Offering panoramic views of Alwar city and the surrounding fertile lands, the fort stands as a giant guardian over the region, symbolizing the valor and evolving history of Rajasthan’s rulers. It remains a popular tourist destination, admired for its monumental scale, strategic importance, and rich cultural heritage.

Inside, visitors can explore several palaces, temples, water bodies, and historic structures, including Salim Mahal, where Jahangir stayed during his exile.
