Situated in the charming village of Champakulam, around 15 kilometers from Alappuzha, this basilica is rich in history and cultural significance.
Believed to be established in AD 427, this church belongs to the Syro-Malabar Church and is under the Archeparchy of Changanacherry. It holds the distinction of being the mother church of almost all Catholic Syrian churches in the Alappuzha District.
The church architecture reflects its storied past, with many reconstructions over the centuries2. The most notable feature is the open-air rock cross, which dates back to AD 1151.
