Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary

Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1989, is located in the Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, covering around 783 square kilometers. Named after the Kamlang River that flows through it, the sanctuary lies between the Lang River to the north and Namdapha National Park to the south, forming part of a rich and diverse ecosystem.

It features dense tropical and subtropical forests with elevations ranging from 200 to 3,000 meters, supporting a wide variety of flora including trees like Ammora wallichii and Gmelina arborea, as well as about 49 species of orchids. The sanctuary is home to all four of India’s big cat species – tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, and snow leopard – and hosts unique animals like the Mishmi takin, hoolock gibbon, slow loris, and the rare white-bellied heron.

Several indigenous tribal communities such as the Idu Mishmi and Miju Mishmi live around the sanctuary, relying on the forests for their livelihood. It houses scenic water bodies like Glow Lake, accessible only by trekking, and is recognized as an ecologically sensitive zone due to its rich biodiversity and conservation importance.
