Kanjirankulam Bird Sanctuary is a protected area of about 1.04 square kilometers near Mudukulathur in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, declared in 1989. It lies adjacent to the Chitrangudi Bird Sanctuary and serves as an important nesting site for several migratory heron species that roost in the prominent babul (Acacia nilotica) trees dominating the area.
The sanctuary’s vegetation mainly consists of tropical dry deciduous forest with babul, the invasive Prosopis juliflora, and grasses such as Bermuda grass. It provides ideal habitat for various migratory waterbirds, including painted stork, white ibis, black ibis, little egret, and great egret, which arrive during the winter months from October to February.
The wetland here retains water for about 3 to 5 months depending on rainfall and is surrounded by agricultural land and small community forests. The sanctuary was designated a Ramsar site in 2022, recognizing its international importance as a wetland habitat. The nearest towns are Mudukulathur and Paramakudi, with Madurai being the closest airport about 117 km away.
