Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary

Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area of about 402.4 square kilometers located in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India, established in 2008. It is part of the southern Western Ghats and is known for its rich biodiversity and status as a tiger habitat.

The sanctuary serves as a critical wildlife corridor and supports a wide range of ecosystems, including southern thorn forests, dry deciduous, moist deciduous, semi-evergreen forests, and evergreen hill sholas. It is the origin of seven rivers, including the Thamirabarani and Pahrali, which are vital to the region's ecology. The sanctuary hosts diverse wildlife such as Indian bison, elephants, Nilgiri tahr, sambar deer, lion-tailed macaques, and reptiles like Indian rock pythons. It also contains several endemic species of plants, amphibians, and insects.

Tribal communities live in and around the sanctuary, maintaining their traditional ways of life. The sanctuary is located near the southernmost tip of India, where the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and Indian Ocean meet, adding to its ecological uniqueness. The best time to visit is from November to March when the weather is cooler and more pleasant.
