The Katarmal Surya Temple, also known as the Badaditya Temple, is a 9th-century temple built by Katarmalla, a Katyuri King, in the Almora district of Uttarakhand.
Perched at an elevation of 2,116 meters above sea level, the temple is situated about 19 kilometers from Almora and is renowned for its exquisite ancient architecture. The temple once boasted intricate designs carved on wooden doors and panels, making it the second most beautiful shrine in India after the Konark Sun Temple.
The main deity of the temple is Lord Burhadita or Vraddhaditya, the old Sun God, and the temple also houses idols of Shiva-Parvati and Lakshmi-Narayana. Twice a year, on October 22 and February 22, the sun's rays fall directly on the idol in the sanctum sanctorum, creating a unique and spectacular phenomenon.
The temple complex includes 45 smaller shrines, adding to its grandeur and historical significance.
