Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary
Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, covers about 400.6 square kilometers in the Terai region of the Upper Gangetic plains. Established in 1975 and incorporated into Project Tiger in 1987, it forms part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve along with Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary and Dudhwa National Park.
The sanctuary is characterized by a mosaic of Sal and teak forests, grasslands, swamps, and wetlands, providing habitat for wildlife such as Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros, leopards, swamp deer, hispid hare, and critically endangered species like the gharial and Gangetic dolphin.
The Girwa River, flowing through the sanctuary, is a key site for observing gharials and mugger crocodiles, as well as the rare Gangetic dolphins. Katarniaghat also serves as an important ecological corridor connecting tiger habitats between India and Nepal, with active conservation efforts helping to revive its tiger population and protect its rich biodiversity.
