Key Gompa, Key Monastery

Key Gompa, also known as Kye Monastery, is one of the largest and most significant Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Situated at an altitude of 4,166 meters (13,668 feet), the monastery overlooks the Spiti River and offers a commanding view of the surrounding valley.

Founded in the 11th century by the great translator Dromtön, a pupil of the famous teacher Atisha, Key Gompa has a rich history and has been a center of learning and spirituality for centuries.

The monastery is known for its beautiful murals, thankas, rare manuscripts, and stucco images. It also houses a collection of weapons, which were used to ward off marauders and maintain control over the region.

The monastery is home to around 200 monks who receive both secular and religious education. The spiritual education imparted here is highly esteemed and aims to nurture the monks' souls to reach enlightenment.

Key Gompa has faced numerous challenges over the centuries, including invasions by Mongol armies, attacks by the Dogra army, and natural calamities like fires and earthquakes. Despite these adversities, the monastery has been rebuilt and continues to be a beacon of Tibetan Buddhism in the region.
