Khooni Darwaza
Khooni Darwaza, located in Central Delhi near Delhi Gate, is a historic gate built by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century and was originally called Kabuli Darwaza as caravans to Kabul passed through it. It earned the name "Khooni Darwaza" or "Bloody Gate" due to its violent past, including the execution of Mughal princes during the 1857 Indian Rebellion when three sons and a grandson of the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar were killed there by the British.
The gate is made of quartzite stone, stands about 50 feet tall, and has three arched entrances with staircases leading to different levels. Its history of bloodshed dates back to Mughal times when heads of criminals and rebels were displayed here as a warning. Today, the gate remains a protected monument amidst Delhi’s urban surroundings, symbolizing the city’s turbulent past and is considered by many as a haunted site due to its grim history.
