Khusro Bagh Prayagraj

Khusro Bagh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is a large walled garden and burial complex that holds immense historical significance. It is home to the tombs of Prince Khusrau Mirza, the eldest son of Emperor Jahangir, his mother Shah Begum, and his sister Nithar Begum.

The garden is an exquisite example of Mughal architecture, with its sandstone mausoleums showcasing intricate carvings and Persian-style floral decorations. The tomb of Shah Begum, originally known as Manbhawati Bai, was designed in 1606 by Aqa Reza, Jahangir’s principal court artist. She tragically committed suicide in 1604 due to the conflict between her husband and son. Her tomb features a three-tiered terrace plinth adorned with arabesque inscriptions.

The tomb of Nithar Begum is considered the most architecturally elaborate, with scalloped arch motifs and painted ceilings depicting stars in concentric circles. Khusrau Mirza’s tomb, the last of the three, marks the site where he was imprisoned and later killed on the orders of his brother, Prince Khurram, who later became Emperor Shah Jahan.
