Kittur Fort
Kittur Fort in Belagavi (Belgaum), Karnataka, is a historic fort built between 1660 and 1691 by Allappa Gowda Sardesai, the fifth ruler of the Kittur dynasty. It became famous as the stronghold of Rani Chennamma, a brave queen who led one of India’s earliest armed rebellions against British rule in 1824, about 33 years before the 1857 revolt.
The fort, made of black basalt rock, includes a grand palace with Peshwa-Islamic architectural influences, spacious royal chambers, and an impressive Durbar Hall. Despite being damaged during British occupation, remnants like ancient weapons, stone idols, paintings, and cannons are displayed in the archaeological museum inside the fort.
The fort’s strategic layout and rich history make it a significant cultural and tourist attraction in north Karnataka, symbolizing early resistance against colonial power and the legacy of Rani Chennamma’s heroism.
