Kolleru Bird Sanctuary

The Kolleru Bird Sanctuary is a significant wetland and bird sanctuary located in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It covers an area of 673 square kilometers and is situated between the deltas of the Krishna and Godavari rivers. The sanctuary was established in November 1999 under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and was designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2002.

The sanctuary is a critical habitat for both resident and migratory birds, serving as a wintering ground for thousands of migratory birds that visit from various parts of the world. Some of the notable bird species found here include the Gray-headed Swamphen, Whiskered Tern, Little Cormorant, Lesser Whistling-Duck, and Northern Shoveler.

The sanctuary also supports diverse aquatic flora and fauna, contributing to the region's biodiversity and ecological balance.

The best time to visit the Kolleru Bird Sanctuary is during the winter months, from November to March, when numerous migratory birds arrive to escape the harsh winter conditions in their native habitats. The nearest city is Eluru, and the nearest airport is the Rajahmundry Airport, located approximately 80-90 kilometers away.
