Kuttampuzha

Kuttampuzha is a large village and gram panchayat in Ernakulam district, Kerala, located about 71 km east of Kochi. Covering a vast area mostly dominated by thick forests and water bodies, it accounts for around 17.7% of Ernakulam's total area.

The village has a significant tribal population, including tribes such as the Muthuvan and Mannan, living in settlements scattered across the dense forests. Historically, Kuttampuzha was part of Idukki district until 1998 before being reassigned to Ernakulam, bringing it closer to the Western Ghats and sharing a border with Tamil Nadu.

The name "Kuttampuzha" is believed to have originated from "Koottanpuzha," meaning a conjoined river, reflecting the meeting of three rivers—Vadattupara, Pinavoorkudy, and Pooyamkutty—that form the Kuttampuzha river. Most of the economy here is agrarian, with rubber and pineapple as primary crops, alongside some traditional forest-based livelihoods like bamboo and reed collection.

The area is ecologically rich, boasting one of Kerala's last evergreen forests and hosting diverse wildlife, excluding lions. Kuttampuzha's natural beauty includes rivers, waterfalls, and forests, making it a developing tourist destination with attractions like Bhoothathankettu reservoir, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, Injathotti suspension bridge, and Pooyamkutty river.

The village has extensive forest covers, including protected tribal settlements, scenic landscapes, and the largest teak tree in Asia. This blend of natural wealth, tribal culture, and historical connections through old trade routes shapes the unique identity of Kuttampuzha. It remains somewhat remote with limited habitation, retaining an unspoiled natural environment.
