Lakheshwar Shiva Temple
Lakheshwar Shiva Temple, located in Kera village near Bhuj in the Kutch district of Gujarat, was built in the late 10th century during the reign of the Chaulukya (Solanki) dynasty. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for its fine Solanki architectural style, constructed primarily from red stone. Its interior is square-shaped with thick walls, and it includes a pradakshina path (circumambulatory walkway) with two stone perforated windows allowing natural light.
The temple's spire is notably decorated with eight triangular sculptures shaped like chaitya windows, adorned with finely carved human figures and miniature spires on the corners. Though much of the original hall or mandapa has collapsed, some well-carved sculptures remain on the northern wall, and several stone Yaksha figures are present around the premises.
The temple suffered extensive damage during the 1819 Rann of Kutch earthquake and later in the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, yet the spire, inner sanctum, and sculptures are still in good condition. Historically, the temple is closely connected to Ra Lakha Phulani, the ruler of Kutch who had his capital at nearby Kapilkot, the ruins of which lie close to the temple.
An annual fair is held here attracting many devotees. This temple is an important cultural and spiritual landmark in Kutch, reflecting the region's rich heritage and architectural tradition.
