Macchi Bhawan, also known as Machhi Bhawan, was a historic fort-palace in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It was originally constructed by Sheikh Abdur Rahim, the Governor of Lucknow during Mughal Emperor Akbar's reign.
The fort had 26 arches, each adorned with two fish symbols, which is believed to be the origin of its name—"Macchi" meaning fish. By 1766, Macchi Bhawan had become one of the most prominent landmarks in Lucknow. It was later used as a residence for the Nawabs of Awadh, serving as a political and administrative center before being replaced by Kaiserbagh Palace.
The fish emblem continued to be a significant symbol in Awadh, appearing on government seals and architectural designs.
