Madei Wildlife Sanctuary
Madei Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Sattari taluka of North Goa, is a lush and ecologically vibrant reserve nestled within the Western Ghats. Spanning approximately 208 square kilometers, it derives its name from the Madei River that flows through its heart, nourishing the dense forests and diverse wildlife that call the sanctuary home.
Established in 1999, it is one of Goa’s most significant conservation areas and has been proposed for inclusion in the prestigious Project Tiger initiative due to confirmed sightings of Bengal tigers.
The sanctuary is a haven for biodiversity, featuring a mix of West Coast Tropical Evergreen Forests, Southern Moist Deciduous Forests, and Subtropical Hill Forests. It shelters a wide array of flora, including rare orchids and the saffron-flowered Ashoka tree, and fauna such as Indian gaur, leopards, wild dogs, and over 250 species of birds.
Reptiles and amphibians thrive here too, with sightings of the King cobra, Indian rock python, and several endangered frogs and caecilians.
