Maharaja Ranjit Singh Fort
The Maharaja Ranjit Singh Fort, also known as Phillaur Fort, is located in the town of Phillaur on the Grand Trunk Road in Ludhiana district, Punjab. Originally built as an imperial sarai (inn) by Shah Jahan in 1628, it was later reconstructed into a fort by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1809.
The fort was designed by Dewan Mohkam Chand with the assistance of French and Italian generals. The fort has a distinct European architectural style, featuring an extensive moat, inclined outer walls to deflect cannon balls, and watchtowers on the gateways. It also houses the shrine of Pir Baba Abdullah Shah Ji and a museum with various antiques and war items.
Since 1981, the fort has been home to the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Police Academy, the oldest police training school in India.
