Massacre Ghat
Massacre Ghat, also known as Satti Chaura Ghat, is a historically significant site located on the southern bank of the River Ganges in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. This ghat marks the northern boundary of Kanpur city and has been an important maritime boarding point for the river route from Kanpur to Allahabad since pre-colonial times.
The ghat gained its grim name due to the tragic events of June 27, 1857, during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. On this day, around 300 British men, women, and children were brutally killed at the ghat, an event that later became known as the Siege of Cawnpore. The rebellion was believed to be led by Nana Sahib of Peshwa, and those who escaped the massacre at the ghat were later killed at the Bibighar Massacre.
Today, Massacre Ghat is still in use as a bathing and ritual ghat for the local population. It is also home to the Satya Ashram Mandir, a Hindu temple built in 1966, which attracts visitors from Kanpur city, especially during the monsoon months.
