Built in the 9th century CE by King Chandra Dev of the Chandela dynasty, the temple is known for its massive 2.5-meter-high Shiva Lingam, one of the largest in North India.

Unlike the intricately carved temples of Khajuraho, Matangeshwar Temple has a plain design, with minimal ornamentation on its interior and exterior walls. The temple hosts a grand Shivaratri festival, where the Lingam is bathed, dressed, and decorated like a bridegroom, attracting thousands of devotees.
