The Matha Kuar Shrine in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, is an ancient Buddhist shrine located just outside the Parinirvana Stupa complex. It is one of the oldest shrines in Kushinagar and is considered very pious by Buddhists. The shrine houses a colossal statue of Buddha, which is 3.05 meters tall and carved out of a single block of blue stone from the Gaya region.
The statue depicts Buddha under the Bodhi Tree in the Bhoomi Sparsha Mudra (Earth-Touching Attitude).
The shrine was originally constructed in the 10th-11th century CE and was restored in 1927. It is surrounded by ruins of monasteries, stupas, and other Buddhist structures, forming part of a large monastic complex.
