Matiabag Palace
Matiabag Palace, also known as Matiabag Rajbari or Hawakhana, is located on a small hilltop beside the Gadadhar River in Gauripur, Dhubri district, Assam. It was built by Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua of the Gauripur royal family, with construction starting in 1904 and completing in 1914.
The palace features a unique blend of Hindu, Mughal, and British architectural styles, crafted by Chinese carpenters from Kolkata. It served as a royal guest house and summer residence for the family. The palace is associated with notable residents like Pramathesh Chandra Barua, a famous pre-independence actor and director, and Padma Shri awardee folk singer Pratima Barua Pandey.
The Government of Assam acquired the palace in 2023 for restoration and conversion into a heritage museum to preserve the cultural legacy of the region.
