Built during the 12th century under the reign of the Kakatiya ruler Pratapa Rudra, the fort served as a strategic stronghold for various dynasties, including the Qutb Shahis and later the Nizams of Hyderabad.
The fort is spread across 100 acres on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The fort features three main entrances—Prathama Dwaram, Simha Dwaram, and Gaja Dwaram, each adorned with intricate carvings.
The Simha Dwaram has two lion sculptures, while the Gaja Dwaram showcases two interlocked elephants. The main entrance displays the double-headed Gandabherundam, the emblem of the Vijayanagara Empire, built by Srikrishna Devaraya.
