Nal Lake, also known as Nal Sarovar, is a large, shallow, seasonal lake located in the Surendranagar district of Gujarat. It spans about 120 to 123 square kilometers and forms the core of the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, which is Gujarat's largest wetland bird sanctuary and one of the biggest in India.
The lake is fed by water from nearby districts during the monsoon, which reduces its salinity and supports a rich variety of aquatic plants and animals. It is an important habitat for over 210 species of migratory and resident birds, including flamingos (both lesser and greater), pelicans (rosy and Dalmatian), storks, ducks, and cranes.
The lake's shallow waters, mudflats, and islets create ideal breeding, feeding, and roosting grounds for these birds. Besides birds, the sanctuary is home to mammals like the endangered wild ass and blackbuck. The best time to visit Nal Lake is between October and March when migratory birds arrive in large numbers.
