Narayan Sarovar Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the arid Kachchh region of Gujarat near the Narayan Sarovar Lake, covers approximately 444 square kilometers and features a unique desert ecosystem with thorn and scrub forests and seasonal wetlands.
Noted for its biodiversity, it is home to about 15 threatened wildlife species, including the chinkara (an important flagship species with a population estimated between 1200 and 1500), blackbuck, caracal, desert fox, Indian wolf, and pangolin. The sanctuary also supports a variety of bird species such as the great Indian bustard, houbara bustard, lesser florican, and black partridge, along with 18 species of reptiles and 19 species of raptors. It is recognized as one of the last remaining habitats of the cheetah in India and is considered a potential site for cheetah reintroduction.
The ecosystem is noteworthy for its rare flowering plants and the challenges it faces due to mining activities, which have affected both wildlife and local human populations.
