National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), located in Kalamassery, Ernakulam district, Kerala, is a public National Law University established in 2005 by Act 27 of the Kerala State Legislature.
It evolved from the earlier National Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), set up in 2002 by the Bar Council of Kerala, and is now one of the older national‑level law universities in India, approved by the Bar Council of India and recognised with UGC 12‑B status.
The university runs on a compact 10‑acre campus in the KINFRA Hi‑Tech Park near Kochi, offering a five‑year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) undergraduate programme as well as one‑year LL.M., Executive LL.M. for working professionals, and various postgraduate diplomas in specialist areas such as cyber law and trade law, with admissions mainly through CLAT.
NUALS focuses on advanced legal education, research‑oriented teaching, and strong links with the legal profession, preparing students for careers in litigation, judiciary, academia, and specialised legal practice, particularly in the vibrant legal‑commerce environment of Kochi and Kerala.
