Ngadak Thupten Shedup Dhargey Choeling Monastery, located in South Sikkim near Namchi, is one of the oldest monasteries in the region. Built during the reign of Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal in the 17th century, this monastery holds historical and spiritual significance. Originally constructed as a palace for Her Highness Pendi Ongmu, it was later converted into a monastery.
The name "Ngadak" translates to "promise," symbolizing the belief that visitors pledge to return to this sacred site.
The monastery is perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the quiet town of Namchi. Its serene atmosphere, coupled with the lush greenery and medicinal plants within its premises, makes it an ideal place for meditation and reflection.
Despite damage caused by an earthquake, the monastery has been supported by iron railings, and a new Gompa has been constructed nearby to preserve its legacy.
