The Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve located in the Nilgiri Mountains of the Western Ghats. It was the first biosphere reserve in India, established in 1986 under UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme. The reserve covers an area of 5,520 square kilometers and encompasses parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.
The reserve is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including tropical evergreen forests, montane sholas and grasslands, semi-evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests, dry deciduous forests, and thorn forests. It harbors a rich variety of flora and fauna, with about 3,300 species of flowering plants, including 132 endemic species.
The reserve is also home to endangered species such as the Nilgiri Tahr and the Lion-tailed macaque.
