Okhla Bird Sanctuary

Okhla Bird Sanctuary, located at the entrance of Noida in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, is a vital ecological haven nestled along the Yamuna River. Spread across approximately 4 square kilometers, this wetland sanctuary was officially declared in 1990 under the Wildlife Protection Act and is recognized as one of India’s 466 Important Bird Areas (IBAs). It is home to over 320 species of birds, including migratory visitors like pintails, shovelers, and flamingos, as well as resident species such as kingfishers, herons, and painted storks.

The sanctuary’s landscape is defined by a large lake created by the Okhla Barrage, surrounded by marshes, grasslands, and woodland patches.

Watchtowers and walking trails offer excellent vantage points for birdwatching and photography, especially during the winter months when migratory birds arrive in large numbers. The sanctuary also supports a rich diversity of plant life, with over 188 recorded species, including herbs, shrubs, and trees.

Despite its ecological significance, Okhla Bird Sanctuary faces challenges from urban encroachment, pollution, and mismanagement. Recent reports highlight a decline in bird populations and concerns over illegal constructions and habitat degradation. However, conservation efforts continue, including awareness campaigns like the recent “Van Mahotsav” plantation drive under the Green Mission 2025.
