Built in 1736 by Jose Paulo de Almeida, a Portuguese nobleman and the founder of Quepem town, the mansion is known for its unique blend of Hindu and Portuguese architectural styles. The mansion faces the Holy Cross Church, which was also built by Jose Paulo de Almeida.
The mansion is set on the banks of the Kushavati River and features lush gardens that have been preserved over the years. The gardens are considered some of the most beautiful pleasure gardens in Goa. Today, the restored mansion and its serene gardens are open to the public.
