Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Palakkad district of Kerala, spans about 285 square kilometers within the Sungam Hills between the Anamalai and Nelliampathy ranges. Established in parts during 1973 and 1984, it became part of the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve in 2010, which covers a larger area including buffer zones.
The sanctuary is recognized by UNESCO as part of the Western Ghats World Heritage site and is known for its diverse habitats including evergreen, moist deciduous, and dry deciduous forests, as well as grasslands and water bodies. It hosts rich biodiversity with species like Bengal tigers, Indian elephants, Indian gaurs, Nilgiri tahrs, sloth bears, and over 260 bird species including the great pied hornbill.
The sanctuary features three man-made reservoirs, scenic landscapes with hills, valleys, and waterfalls, and activities such as safaris, trekking, and bird watching. It also houses the historic Kannimara teak tree, one of the oldest and largest teak trees in the world, adding to its ecological and cultural significance.
