Payal Fort

Payal Fort, located near Ludhiana in Punjab, was built in 1771 by Maharaja Amar Singh of the Patiala state with the cooperation of the Mughals.

The fort stands as a historic monument reflecting the region's rich past and served as a significant stronghold. The town of Payal, previously known as Sahibgarh, has a history spanning about 1,200 years and was once under the reign of Emperor Akbar in the late 16th century before coming under Patiala's control in the 18th century.

The fort is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and has undergone partial renovation, although some interior parts remain in disrepair. Payal is also home to multiple religious sites, including Hindu temples, mosques, and gurdwaras, illustrating its diverse cultural heritage. The fort area has been used for various purposes over time, including serving as a government girls' school.

While the fort currently attracts tourists interested in history and architecture, its upkeep faces challenges, leaving parts of it dilapidated. The town itself is lively, showing a mix of historical significance and contemporary life.
