Peermade
Hill Station
Peermade
Peermade, also spelled Peerumedu, is a scenic hill station and village in Idukki district, Kerala, situated at an elevation of around 915 meters. It gets its name from the 18th-century Sufi saint Peer Mohammed, who settled in the region after being captivated by its natural beauty.
Peermade was historically under the rule of the kings of Changanacherry and later the Kingdom of Travancore. The area remained largely unexplored until the 19th century when Henry Baker Jr., a Christian missionary, introduced coffee and tea plantations, transforming Peermade into a thriving plantation town. The British further developed Peermade as a prominent summer retreat, contributing to the growth of tea and coffee cultivation.
It is surrounded by lush forests, vibrant plantations, and tribal communities, making it an important center of agriculture, ecotourism, and cultural heritage in Kerala’s high ranges.
