Pemayangtse Monastery, located in West Sikkim, is one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in the region. Founded in 1647 by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, it follows the Nyingma Order of Tibetan Buddhism and serves as the principal monastery controlling other Nyingma monasteries in Sikkim.
Originally a small shrine, it was expanded in 1705 during the reign of Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal. The monastery is known for its stunning architecture, intricate paintings, and antique idols. It houses a remarkable wooden structure depicting Guru Rinpoche’s heavenly abode, Sangdogpalri, which is a masterpiece of craftsmanship.
The monastery also plays a vital role in Sikkim’s religious traditions, with monks chosen from the Bhutia community.
