Pitti
Pitti, also known as Pakshipitti, is an uninhabited coral islet in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, India, situated in the Arabian Sea. It lies about 24 kilometers north of Kavaratti Island and is part of the Pitti Bank, a largely submerged atoll. The island itself is small, around 300 by 200 meters, low, arid, and devoid of vegetation, with a rocky eastern side.
It has difficult accessibility due to the lack of adequate anchorage points. Pitti is ecologically significant as an important nesting site for pelagic seabirds such as sooty terns, greater crested terns, and brown noddies, which breed on the dry coral rubble. The island's name, Pakshipitti, means "bird island" in Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil, highlighting its role as a vital bird sanctuary.
It falls administratively under the township of Kavaratti Island within Lakshadweep. The surrounding Pitti Bank is a submerged atoll stretching about 49 kilometers long, with a large lagoon area, making the area rich in marine biodiversity.
