Rajparian Wildlife Sanctuary

Rajparian Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Daksum Wildlife Sanctuary, is a protected area located near Anantnag city in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, about 42 kilometers from Anantnag and 85 kilometers south of Srinagar. It covers an area of approximately 20 to 49 square kilometers, depending on sources, and lies in the catchment area of the Rajparian Nallah, a key watercourse in the sanctuary.

The sanctuary was established in 1981, having previously been a game reserve under the Maharaja's rule, primarily for the protection of the critically endangered Hangul deer (Kashmir stag). It features dense coniferous forests with trees such as kail pine, spruce, fir, birch, deodar, and juniper, alongside sub-alpine pastures and riverine vegetation. Besides the Hangul, the sanctuary is home to animals like the Himalayan black bear, musk deer, and many bird species.

It provides important habitat and conservation efforts focus on preserving its unique biodiversity within the Kashmir Valley. The sanctuary is accessible by road from Srinagar and Anantnag and serves both ecological and tourism purposes. It is notable for its serene natural beauty and varied wildlife.
