Built in 1459 by Queen Jasmade Hadi, the wife of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, the lake was created for natural water conservation in the arid region. Adjacent to Ranisar Lake is Padamsar Lake, built by Queen Padmini, the daughter of Rana Sanga of Mewar, in 1520.
These lakes are excellent examples of ancient water management systems in Rajasthan.
