Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary
Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, covers around 1,271 square kilometers across Raisen, Sehore, and Bhopal districts. It was established as a sanctuary in 1976 and declared a tiger reserve in December 2024, becoming the eighth tiger reserve in the state.
The landscape features undulating hills, plateaus, valleys, and dense teak forests, supporting a rich biodiversity including Bengal tigers, leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar, nilgai, and over 150 bird species.
The sanctuary is home to the Bhimbetka rock shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient rock paintings. While the reserve promotes tiger conservation and eco-tourism, it also faces challenges such as poaching, habitat fragmentation due to a railway line, and human-wildlife conflicts, with ongoing efforts to strengthen protection and community cooperation.
The sanctuary’s proximity to Bhopal makes it accessible and significant for both wildlife and cultural tourism.
