Royal Cenotaphs
The Royal Cenotaphs, also known as the Ahar Cenotaphs, are a group of memorial structures located in Ahar, a town near Udaipur, Rajasthan. These cenotaphs honor the rulers of the Mewar dynasty, who ruled the region from the 7th century until India's independence in the 1940s. The site contains more than 250 cenotaphs built over approximately 350 years.
The cenotaphs are characterized by their elevated platforms with columns and umbrella-shaped roofs, reflecting traditional Rajasthani architectural styles. Among them, 19 marble cenotaphs commemorate the 19 maharajas who were cremated at this spot. The cenotaphs are also known as Mahasati, meaning "great cremation ground".
