It is notable for its conservation efforts, especially for providing purebred Asiatic lions for endangered species breeding programs, since wild Asiatic lions are now found only in the nearby Gir Forest.
The zoo houses more than 900 animals of around 71 species across three sections: birds, wild animals, and deer/antelope, along with aquatic and reptile species. It attracts over 850,000 visitors annually and is recognized as one of the major zoos in India, offering educational and recreational experiences. The best time to visit is from October to March, and it is closed on Wednesdays.
