Salimgarh Fort
Salimgarh Fort, built in 1546 by Salim Shah Suri, the son of Sher Shah Suri, is located in Central Delhi and predates the Red Fort. Constructed on a former island of the Yamuna River, the fort was designed to protect Shergarh from the Mughal Emperor Humayun, who was temporarily ousted by the Sur dynasty.
The fort has a triangular layout with thick rubble masonry walls and circular bastions, and it is connected to the Red Fort by an arched bridge called the Bahadur Shah Gate, built during the reign of Bahadur Shah Zafar. Under Mughal rule, it was used for military purposes and later converted into a prison by Emperor Aurangzeb, a practice continued by the British after 1857 to detain prisoners including members of the Indian National Army.
The fort played a significant role during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, serving as a strategic point and witnessing fierce fighting. Today, Salimgarh Fort forms part of the Red Fort Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and stands as a symbol of India’s tumultuous history and struggle for freedom.
