Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest surviving libraries in Asia, established in the 16th century by the Nayak kings and later expanded by the Maratha rulers of Thanjavur.
It holds a vast collection of over 49,000 manuscripts and books on palm leaves and paper in languages such as Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Marathi, and English, including rare and ancient texts on medicine, literature, and art. The library was greatly enriched by Maharaja Serfoji II, a scholar who collected works from renowned centers of learning across India.
Since 1918, the library has been a public institution managed by the state, featuring a museum with paintings, portraits of Maratha kings, and historical artifacts.
