Built by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty between 1090 and 1093, the temple complex consists of two distinct structures: the larger Sas Temple and the smaller Bahu Temple.

The name "Sas Bahu" translates to "mother-in-law and daughter-in-law," symbolizing the familial bond and shared devotion. The larger Sas Temple was built for the king's wife, while the smaller Bahu Temple was for his daughter-in-law. Despite suffering damage from numerous invasions and wars, the temples still showcase intricate carvings and sculptures depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.
