Saundatti Fort
Saundatti Fort, also called Savadatti Fort, is an 18th-century hill fort located in Belagavi district, Karnataka. It was built around 1734 by Jayappa Desai, a local ruler, and later came under the control of Hyder Ali of Mysore. The fort is shaped as a nine-sided polygon fortified with eight bastions and surrounded by a moat, symbolizing strong defense. It stands on a small hill and is accessible via a steep climb.
At the center of the fort lies the Kadasiddheshwara Temple, which is notable for its more than 200 ornamental geometric carvings, some with paint. A recently built Hanuman temple is also within the fort premises. The fort's walls and bastions remain largely intact, and from its top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding town of Saundatti. The fort's blend of military architecture and religious significance makes it a unique historic and cultural site in the region.
