The Sawan Bhadon Pillars are a fascinating historical feature located in Orchha, near Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. These two tall, plain pillars stand beside the Dinman Hardaul Palace, facing the Phool Bagh. They are named after the two rainy months of the Hindu calendar, Sawan and Bhadon.
According to local folklore, the pillars were erected to honor two important historical figures: Bagh Raj, the son of Bir Singh Deo, and Mahatma Anup Giri, a revered saint of ancient Orchha. The legend goes that Prince Bagh Raj got lost while hunting and encountered Mahatma Anup Giri meditating.
When Bagh Raj inquired about the direction of the deer, he received no response and assumed he should proceed in the same direction. Realizing his mistake, he returned to find that he had killed the saint. Upon discovering his son's actions, Bir Singh Deo, a just and fair ruler, sentenced Bagh Raj to death.
